What is the Political Courage Test?
This candidate has responded to a Political Courage Test in a previous election. As a continued effort to provide the American public with factual information on candidates running for public office, these archived responses are made available here.

California Congressional Election 2008 Political Courage Test

The Political Courage Test asks candidates which items they will support if elected. It does not ask them to indicate which items they will oppose. Through extensive research of public polling data, we discovered that voters are more concerned with what candidates would support when elected to office, not what they oppose. If a candidate does not select a response to any part or all of any question, it does not necessarily indicate that the candidate is opposed to that particular item.

Indicate which principles you support (if any) regarding abortion.

a) Abortions should always be illegal.
X b) Abortions should always be legal.
c) Abortions should be legal only within the first trimester.
d) Abortions should be legal when the pregnancy resulted from incest or rape.
e) Abortions should be legal when the life of the woman is endangered.
f) Dilation and extraction or "partial-birth" abortion procedures should be legal.
g) Medicare, Medicaid, and federal subsidies should be prohibited from being used on abortion procedures.
This is a medical decision that should be left to women and their families. I don't think that it would be the right choice for my family, but it's most certainly not my place or the government's place to tell a woman what the right decision is for her.

k) Eliminate all federal education standards and testing requirements for K-12 students (No Child Left Behind).
The current law, No Child Left Behind, is a punitive system designed to punish teachers, students, and schools for not meeting unfair, unattainable standards. NCLB is predicated on the belief that every child, in every classroom, in every school is the same - that each district and each community has the same needs, same challenges, and same goals. This is simply not true. There is no one-size-fits-all solution for education. I will work to return local control of schools to communities. Visit our website, www.HedrickforCongress.com, for my education solutions.

I am a gun owner, target-shooter, and support our 2nd amendment right to bear arms. I believe we must work to end gun violence, and I am committed to keeping firearms out of the hands of felons, violent offenders, and mentally-ill individuals. I oppose military-style assault weapons, 'Saturday Night Specials,' and would support reauthorization of the assault weapons ban. These weapons have no useful purpose in our neighborhoods. I also support closing the gun show loophole that currently allows individuals to purchase guns at gun shows without having to submit a background check.

In the richest country in the world, it is unconscionable that we treat health care as a commodity instead of a basic human right. There needs to be a level of base coverage for all Americans - right now the only plan we have is the emergency room, the most fiscally irresponsible option. What should have been a $70 doctor visit turns into a $1500 visit that we pay for in increased premiums or through taxes. This is a broken system that needs to be fixed. Please visit our website, www.HedrickforCongress.com, for my health care solutions.

The military was given two jobs in Iraq - get rid of Saddam and make sure there are no WMDs. The military did their job. Now it's time for us to do ours and bring them home as quickly and safely as possible. I believe this was the wrong war in the wrong place at the wrong time. For my full position on Iraq, please visit our website www.HedrickforCongress.com, and check out the issues pages.
I know we need to trade with the world - I'm not an isolationist. I am a proponent of fair trade rather than free trade agreements. Our economy has been decimated by putting our workers in direct competition with people who earn $0.75 (or less) an hour. We need to enter into equitable, bilateral trade agreements with countries that will observe labor rights and environmental standards. Please visit our website, www.HedrickforCongress.com, to read more about my solutions for the economy.

My priorities are to restore our economy through fair trade agreements, and through a WPA-like initiative to rebuild our bridges, highways, ports, etc. I will work to end the occupation of Iraq and bring our troops home now. I support the Responsible Plan for a safe and orderly disengagement. I will work for a base universal health care plan that will cover all Americans' health needs and to re-write No Child Left Behind to actually achieve its guarantee of excellent opportunities and outcomes for all children.
